Srinagar, 29 Aug: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to hand over the alleged rape and murder case of a schoolgirl in Chatroo, Kishtwar, to the Crime Branch, seeking a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation.
In a post on X, Mufti said, “The rape and murder of a school girl in Chatroo, Kishtwar, is not merely another instance of rising crimes against women.” She described the incident as a “deep, festering wound on the conscience of our society.”
Mufti said that ten days after the crime, the silence surrounding the case was deepening the anguish of the grieving family and eroding public faith in the justice system.
She called for decisive action against those responsible and demanded “exemplary punishment” for the perpetrators.
“If decisive action is not taken now and the perpetrators brought to justice with exemplary punishment, such heinous crimes will continue with impunity,” Mufti said.
She appealed to LG Manoj Sinha to transfer the case to the Crime Branch, saying this was necessary to ensure a “fair, transparent and time bound investigation.”
The PDP chief’s demand comes amid calls for swift and credible action in the case, with the focus now on ensuring that the investigation establishes the facts and those responsible are brought to justice.
