Calls students “backbone of healthcare system”, says doctors working 36-hour shifts cannot be met with neglect

Srinagar, Sept 2: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday met protesting medical students and urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and resolve their demand for a stipend of up to Rs 30,000 within a week.

Taking to X, Mufti said it was painful to see young doctors, whom she described as the future of the healthcare system, being forced to take to the streets to demand what she termed their rightful stipend.

“It was deeply painful to see those who work exhausting 36-hour shifts, including nights, caring for patients and saving lives, forced to protest for a basic right,” she said.

Mufti said the protesting medical students are the “backbone of our healthcare system” and their dedication should not be met with neglect.

“A government that expects them to serve with sacrifice must also respect their dignity,” she said.

She appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to meet the protesting students at the earliest and resolve the issue within a week.
