Mirwaiz Alleges Weekly House Arrest a Tactic to Undermine Muslim Institutions

NewsEye Desk Srinagar, 18 APR: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of Kashmir has once again raised alarm over what he calls a systematic effort to silence dissent and weaken key religious institutions in the Valley. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Mirwaiz said, “Every Friday I am put under arbitrary house arrest! Putting pressure on me not to speak up, the ban also aims to weaken the centrality of Muslim institutions of the valley—the Jama Masjid, office of the Mirwaiz—and cause collective grief to Muslims and all those who oppose this authoritarian and sectarian outlook.” The Hurriyat leader wrote that despite his case being sub judice in the High Court, the restrictions on his movement continue unabated. “My house detention case is still pending in court, where I am seeking relief from the Hon’ble High Court, but in such times, patience remains our only strength,” he added. The administration has not officially responded to the latest claims, but security agencies have previously cited “law and order concerns” to justify restrictions on separatist leaders. The Jama Masjid in Srinagar, historically a central hub for both religious and political discourse, has witnessed repeated closures and surveillance, particularly since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

Supreme Court Halts Waqf Act Amendments Amid Nationwide Protests

The Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on the implementation of the controversial amendments to the Waqf Act, 2025, in response to widespread protests and over 70 legal petitions challenging the new law’s constitutionality. The court’s order halts all new appointments to Waqf boards and freezes any changes to the status of Waqf properties—including the contentious ‘waqf by user’ clause—until May 5. This decision comes in the wake of violent demonstrations, particularly in West Bengal, where three people have reportedly died during clashes with authorities. Opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, and AIMIM, have strongly criticized the amendments, alleging that the inclusion of non-Muslims on Waqf boards and the scrapping of ‘waqf by user’ provisions infringe upon the religious and administrative rights of the Muslim community. The apex court emphasized that the interim relief is aimed at restoring peace and allowing a thorough judicial review of the concerns raised, particularly regarding potential religious discrimination and government overreach. A final verdict will depend on further hearings, scheduled to resume early next month.

Waheed Para Accuses NC of Secret BJP Deal, Urges Kashmiris to Defend Muslim Identity

PDP leader and MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para on Thursday said that the people of Kashmir must stand up and speak for the 24 crore Muslims of India who are looking towards them to defend their religious identity and sacred places across the country. “India is the second-largest Muslim country. There are issues concerning our masjids and shrines—like those at Nizamuddin and Jamia Masjid—and we need to speak up. The 24 crore Muslims of India are waiting for the people of Kashmir to raise their voice,” Para said, while addressing a party convention in Srinagar, as per news agency JKNS. He asserted that religious interference is unacceptable. “When I don’t interfere in temples or Hindu religious practices, why should anyone interfere in my religion?” he said. Highlighting the importance of the occasion, Para said, “We are here today to send a message—to protect our masjids and shrines.” Taking a dig at former RAW chief A.S. Dulat, he said, “Dulat is being portrayed as an expert on Kashmir. He is part of Farooq Abdullah’s circle. When he visits here, he goes to their house.” Referring to Dulat’s claim that Dr. Farooq Abdullah was ready to go with the BJP on August 5, Para said, “We had an alliance with the BJP and people were angry with us. But now they (National Conference) don’t have an alliance, yet they have a deal with the BJP.” He also targeted NC vice president Omar Abdullah: “Omar remained busy in the Tulip Garden but didn’t come to the Assembly. We tried to table a resolution on the Waqf Bill, as directed by Mehbooba Mufti, but they didn’t support it.” “What is the difference between the Omar-led government and the LG administration? Properties were being attached during LG’s rule and even during Omar’s NC rule,” Waheed said. (JKNS)
