Former MLA Amin Bhat set to rejoin Congress tomorrow

Srinagar, May 20 (KNO): Days after resigning from the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), former member of the legislative assembly (MLA) Muhammad Amin Bhat is set to rejoin the Congress on Wednesday. Sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Bhat is expected to join the party tomorrow. Bhat’s rejoining is likely to strengthen the Congress’s presence in South Kashmir. In the last Assembly elections, the Congress secured two seats in the region, and Bhat’s return is expected to provide further boost to the party’s efforts. In the last assembly election, NC won 11 out of 16 seats in the region. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured two seats, while an independent candidate claimed one. The formation of the Justice & Development Front (JDF) has added a new dimension to politics of south Kashmir as it draws its cadre from an organisation that was considered influential in the region’s politics before 1987—(KNO)

23 Booked Under PSA in Srinagar for Terror Links

In a major crackdown on anti-national and subversive elements, Srinagar Police has booked 23 individuals under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for their involvement in terrorist activities and repeated disruption of public order across the district. Police spokesperson in a statement issued to the news agency JKNS, these individuals were either associates of proscribed terrorist outfits or known miscreants involved in criminal acts despite having multiple FIRs already registered against them. The following individuals have been identified and booked under PSA:Saqib Shafi Wani of Baghi Sunder Bala Chattabal; Waleed Aijaz Sheikh alias Waleed of Batmaloo; Hashim Farooq Mir of Ikhrajpora Rajbagh; Sayar Ahmad Sheikh alias Sahil of Batmaloo; Tawseef Ahmad Khan of Firdous Abad Batmaloo; Showkat Ahmad Dar of Nishat; Ali Mohammad Rather alias Ali Pakistani of Malfuk Hazratbal; Owais Farooq Lone of Tral (presently in Maisuma); Musaib Ahmad Khan of Hamdania Colony Bemina; Feroz Ahmad Najar of Chandipora Harwan; Shabir Ahmad Ghulam of Bagiyas; Sajid Shahnawaz Mir alias Patrole of Batmaloo; Numan Qayoom Ganie of Chanpora; Owais Altaf Bhat of Padshahibagh; Junaid Zahoor Bangroo of Malik Angan Fatehkadal; Muzaffar Farooq Mir alias Muzaffar of Kanpora Budgam; Uneeb Naseer Mir of Kanpora Budgam; Irfan Ahmad Seeru alias Irfan of Nawakadal; Fahad Bashir Sidique alias Umar Kochwa of Khanyar; Zubair Ahmad Lone of Saidapora Eidgah; Faizan Yaseen Sheikh of Jamalatta; Ibrahim Rashid Ganie alias Gopi alias Umar of Batmaloo; and Abdul Hamid Ganie of Harwan. Formal detention orders were issued by the District Magistrate Srinagar on the basis of detailed dossiers prepared by the police. All 23 have since been shifted to District Jails in Poonch, Udhampur, and Kot Balwal, it reads. Police said that despite facing multiple criminal cases in the past, these individuals continued their disruptive and anti-national conduct even after securing bail. Their repeated involvement in criminal and public disorder activities compelled the authorities to act under PSA. J&K Police reiterated its commitment to uprooting anti-national networks and warned those engaging in unlawful acts that the law would catch up with them. “Every offender will face justice,” the spokesperson said. 10th Class Girl Sexually Assaulted by Teacher, Pion in Srinagar

A school girl has been allegedly sexually assaulted in Chatterhama area of Srinagar outskirts, reports said. Reports said that a School Girl (name withheld) of 10th class was allegedly sexually assaulted by her school teacher and peon of Government Secondary School Chatterhama. They said that the accused teacher and peon have been arrested. Meanwhile, a case under FIR NO. 23/2025, under section 68,127 BNS, 5/6, 16 POSCO Act has been registered and investigations are underway. (Asian News Hub) Further details awaited.

Massive Blaze Guts Two Houses, Injures Three in Guru Bazar

Anas Riyaz A massive fire broke out this afternoon in the densely populated Guru Bazar area of Srinagar, resulting in the complete destruction of two residential houses, partial damage to a third, and leaving three injured. The blaze was reported at approximately 4:17 PM and quickly spread through the multi-storey structures before fire and emergency services managed to bring it under control. According to officials, a four-storey residential house owned by Rashid Mahmood, son of the late Ali Mohammad Najar, was completely gutted. Another adjoining house jointly owned by Mohammad Shafi Dar and Feroz Ahmed Dar, sons of Ghulam Rasool Dar, was also fully destroyed in the fire. A third house, belonging to Mohammad Yousuf Jan, son of the late Mohammad Maqbool Jan, suffered partial damage due to the intensity of the flames. Three people sustained injuries during the incident. The injured have been identified as Manzoor Ahmed Dajoo, Suhaib Shafi, and Riyaz Ahmed Sofi. They were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable. Fire and emergency teams, assisted by Police, CRPF and local residents, worked for several hours to douse the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and is currently under investigation. Authorities have begun assessing the losses and have assured necessary support and relief to the affected families. (NewsEye)

Kashmir University Postpones All Exams Till May 18

Kashmir University on Tuesday postponed all examinations scheduled up to and including May 18. In a notification issued by the Assistant Controller examination (Conduct) a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS reads, “All the University examinations scheduled to be held up to and including 18th of May 2025 stand postponed.” “Revised dates for the postponed papers shall be available on the official website of the University,” it reads. Students have been advised to regularly check the website for updates regarding the fresh examination schedule. (JKNS)

Three Militants Killed in Shopian Encounter, Ops On

Three Militants have been killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in the Keller area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday morning. Police sources told news agency JKNS that the operation began after security forces received intelligence about terrorist presence in the area. A tight cordon was established, and during the search operation, forces came under fire, triggering a fierce gunfight, they said. “Three terrorists have been neutralized so far,” police sources said, adding that the operation is still underway and the area remains under tight cordon. Reinforcements have been deployed, and searches are continuing in the area to ensure no other terrorist is hiding, they said. More details are awaited. (JKNS)

JKBOSE Likely to Declare Class 11th Results Next Week: Sources

Arsalan Ashiq The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) is likely to announce the Class 11th examination results in the coming week, most probably after May 20. A source speaking to NewsEye said, result compilation is in its final stages. The annual regular exams for Class 11th students began on February 18 this year. As per official figures, a total of 120,673 students had registered for the exams—109,137 in soft zone areas and 11,536 in hard zones. The board had set up 1,134 examination centres across Jammu and Kashmir, including 1,004 in soft zones and 130 in hard zone regions. Board official have earlier said that class 11th results could take more time as the  students have already been provisionally admitted to the next grade. However students and parents alike are eagerly waiting for the results.

Encounter Breaks Out in Shopian: Police Officials

An encounter has broken out between militants and a joint team of security forces in the Shukroo Keller area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district. Sources say 2-3 militants are believed to be trapped in the dense forest area. Top police officials confirmed that initial gunshots were heard in the Keller forest zone. Haj Flights Resume from Srinagar, Check Your Flight Number

In a major relief for Haj pilgrims from Jammu & Kashmir, the J&K Haj Committee has resumed chartered flights from Srinagar after a brief suspension caused by the recent India-Pakistan tensions that led to a temporary shutdown of airports across the region. As per the fresh notification issued today by Dr. Shujaat Ahmad Qureshi (JKAS), Executive Officer, the revised flight schedule for pilgrims departing on May 14, 2025, has been released, replacing the earlier communication dated May 10. Flight Schedule & Reporting Time at Haj House, Bemina – May 14: Flight SG-5114 – Reporting Time: 6:00 to 6:30 AM Flight SG-5214 – Reporting Time: 9:00 to 9:30 AM Pilgrims are instructed to report on time at Haj House, Bemina, Srinagar, and ensure their luggage complies with airline regulations. “Only standard baggage will be accepted. Banned items in check-in luggage will not be permitted,” the notification reads. The Committee assured that the schedule for the remaining batches of pilgrims will be shared separately in the coming days. This fresh development comes after days of uncertainty for hundreds of pilgrims, as air operations were halted due to escalating border tensions between India and Pakistan, disrupting planned Haj travel from the Valley.

All Schools, Colleges to Reopen Tomorrow in Kashmir Except Border Areas

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir V.K. Bidhuri on Monday said that all schools and colleges across the Valley will reopen from Tuesday, with the exception of those located in Kupwara, Baramulla, and the Sub-District of Gurez. Speaking to news agency JKNS, Div Com Kashmir V.K Bidhuri said, “Schools, Colleges will resume functioning from tomorrow in all districts except Kupwara, Baramulla and Gurez, where the situation is still being monitored.” The decision follows a period of closure due to heightened tensions in the region last week. Authorities are assessing the situation in the excluded areas and will announce reopening dates accordingly. (JKNS)
