Kashmir’s Struggle: Liquor Ban or Economic Survival?

Srinagar, Feb 16, KNT: The idea of a complete liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir has been a topic of debate for years, but in reality, such a ban remains more of a myth than a serious policy consideration. While states like Gujarat, Mizoram, and Nagaland have prohibited alcohol, successive governments in Jammu and Kashmir have been reluctant to follow suit. Instead, many political leaders justify the presence of liquor in the region by drawing comparisons with European countries and some Arab nations where alcohol is regulated rather than outright banned. Records from the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, accessed by Kashmir News Trust, reveal that former Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather had strongly opposed a liquor ban in the region, arguing that such a move would negatively impact the economy. His stance raises an important question—does Kashmir truly rely on liquor revenue for its financial stability, or is this merely an excuse to avoid confronting the social consequences of alcohol consumption? One of the primary reasons politicians hesitate to impose a ban is the substantial revenue generated from alcohol sales. The excise duty on liquor contributes a significant amount to the state’s economy, and at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is facing financial constraints, cutting off this source of income is seen as impractical. Prohibition in other Indian states has often led to illegal liquor trade, creating a black market that is difficult to control, which further strengthens the argument against a ban. Another factor that influences this decision is tourism and commercial interests. While many in the tourism industry support a liquor ban to promote ethical and family-friendly tourism, others believe that alcohol availability caters to a certain segment of visitors. The hospitality sector, particularly high-end hotels and restaurants, benefits from liquor sales, and some policymakers fear that banning alcohol could discourage a section of domestic and international tourists. Opponents of the ban also cite the failures of prohibition in other states. In Gujarat, where alcohol has been banned for decades, illegal liquor trade continues to thrive. Similar issues have been observed in Bihar and Nagaland, where prohibition has led to increased smuggling and black-market operations rather than eradicating alcohol consumption. This has led many in power to argue that a liquor ban would create more governance challenges than solutions. Politics and vote-bank considerations also play a significant role in the reluctance to impose a ban. Liquor prohibition is a sensitive issue that divides public opinion, and political parties often avoid taking a clear stance for fear of alienating sections of their voter base. Some leaders choose to maintain the status quo rather than risk upsetting business communities involved in the liquor trade or sections of society that do not favor a ban. Beyond political calculations, the influence of the alcohol industry itself cannot be ignored. The liquor trade is backed by powerful lobbies that exert significant pressure on policymakers. Across India, alcohol manufacturers and distributors have successfully argued that liquor sales boost state revenue and employment, making it difficult for governments to take strong action. In Jammu and Kashmir, similar economic arguments are used to resist calls for prohibition. The debate over banning liquor in Jammu and Kashmir is ultimately a clash between social ethics and economic realities. On one hand, those advocating for a ban argue that alcohol consumption contradicts the cultural and religious values of the region and contributes to social problems. On the other, opponents emphasize the economic impact and governance challenges associated with prohibition. The fundamental question remains whether the government should prioritize social well-being over financial concerns or seek a middle ground by enforcing stricter regulations without an outright ban. State or UT? JKBOSE Textbook Redefines Human Anatomy!

Srinagar, Feb 16 (JKNS): The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) continues to remain in the headlines, from a shortage of textbooks and denial of Class 10 examination forms to now making mistakes in textbooks, highlighting negligence on the board’s part. Public outcry erupted after a social media user posted a video on X showing a JKBOSE Class 5 Economics textbook, Disaster Management and Road Safety Education, containing a misprinted sentence: “Unconsciousness or fainting is a UT of Human body.” The correct sentence should have been: “State of Human Body.” Following this, people took to social media to criticize JKBOSE’s carelessness, pointing out the apparent lack of proper textbook review. The mistake was not limited to a single occurrence. On page 29, the same incorrect phrase appeared in two other places within the textbook. On the next page, the book states that this “UT” (which was mistakenly printed instead of “state”) can lead to the victim’s death if immediate first aid is not provided. In the following line, the word “UT” is repeated instead of “state.” The textbooks are also available for students on the Board’s official website with the same mistakes. Many social media users expressed their disappointment and frustration over such errors in school textbooks. One social media user, Umar Arfiq Mir, reacting to the mistake, wrote on X: “Should we laugh or cry? We don’t understand. It feels like we are falling into a well where there is no way to climb back up… May Allah have mercy on all of us.” Another user, likely a student, Murtaza Mushtaq, wrote: “Yes, this is the one. I also have an older 10th-grade textbook, and I am currently in 10th grade. I’ve noticed multiple mistakes in the new SST book, but they are correct in my previous edition. These errors appear in various chapters.” Another user, Samit Bhat, expressed concern over the work ethic of officials, writing: “No one nowadays is willing to discharge their duties as designated. Most keep cribbing only but never give 8 hours of focused time that they are paid for.” Meanwhile, MLA Pulwama Waheed-ur-Rehman Para also reacted to the issue, writing on X: “State of Affairs,” with a video attached. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Naeem Akhtar also commented on the matter. While taking to X, he shared the video and wrote: “UT of affairs. Listen to this short video. State is downgraded to UT, and so is the English language in our BOSE books prescribed for school. It’s a Tragicomedy that we are living.” The textbook errors have once again put JKBOSE under scrutiny, with social media users and political figures questioning the board’s credibility and its responsibility in ensuring error-free educational material. It is important to note that JKBOSE has an editorial board responsible for proofreading content before textbooks are sent for printing. However, despite this, the textbook was approved without proper proofreading, raising questions about the board’s review process. (JKNS)

A two-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter and determine the cause of the stampede, executive director of information & publicity at the Railway Board, Dilip Kumar said. This comes after the recent stampede at Maha Kumbh due to sudden surge in devotees on Mauni Amavasya that led to the death of 30. The authorities have said that the “unprecedented” rush of passengers at two platforms- 13 and 14- led to chaos and panic ultimately causing the stampede. In an official statement, the deputy commissioner of police (railway) reported that platform number 14 was already heavily crowded as the Prayagraj Express awaited departure. Additionally, delays in the Swatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express led to an increased passenger presence on platforms 12, 13, and 14, further contributing to the congestion. “As per CMI, every hour 1,500 general tickets were sold by railways due to which the station got overcrowded and became uncontrollable. There was a stampede at platform no. 14 and near escalator near platform no. 16,” the DCP said. DCP KPS Malhotra elaborated that the crowd surged within 15-20 minutes after the announcement of a special train, as passengers hurried to board. “Two trains were delayed, and due to the increased footfall, the crowd grew massive. A few people sustained injuries. As of now, the situation is under control,” he had said. An eyewitness recalled similar situation and said, “The stampede broke out around 9.30pm… When people on platform number 13 saw trains on platforms 14 and 15 – they moved towards these platforms. The platforms of the trains were not changed, but the crowd was so huge that it could not be controlled….” One of the passengers, Dharmendra Singh, recounted his experience, stating that he was traveling to Prayagraj but faced difficulties as many trains were either delayed or canceled. “I was going to Prayagraj but many trains were running late or were cancelled. The station was overcrowded. There were far more people than I have ever seen at this station. In front of me, six or seven women were taken away on stretchers.” Likewise, the railway ministry said, “An Unprecedented rush situation developed today at about 10 pm in New Delhi railway station near platforms 13 & 14. Some of the passengers present there on the platforms fainted due to this sudden rush further leading to the rumours of stampede like situation. This led to the spread of panic.” The railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a high level inquiry into the incident.(Agencies) (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NewsEye staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

Mirwaiz Slams Govt Over Job Terminations, Book Seizures

Srinagar, 15 FEB[NewsEye]: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned the recent termination of three government employees by the Jammu and Kashmir LG administration over alleged terror links, calling it an “authoritarian move” aimed at gradually rendering Kashmiris jobless. In a social media post, Mirwaiz questioned the government’s intentions: “The termination of three more state employees in such an authoritarian manner is highly condemnable. Do the rulers want to remove all Kashmiris slowly and steadily from government services and render them jobless?” He urged elected representatives to take immediate action, reminding them of their manifesto commitments. “It is the duty of the elected representatives to take up this issue urgently with the concerned as they have committed in their manifesto and stop this harassment.” Mirwaiz also criticized the crackdown on Islamic literature, calling it “ridiculous,” “Cracking down on Islamic literature and seizing them from bookstores while condemnable is ridiculous. Policing thought by seizing books is absurd, to say the least, in the time of access to all information on virtual highways.” He wrote. The government has not yet responded to the political remarks, but the developments have sparked fresh debate over the administration’s actions and their impact on Kashmir’s socio-political landscape.(NewsEye)
