₹75 Set as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr, Grand Mufti Urges Timely Paying

The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, has announced that the mandatory Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (Zakat al-Fitr) for this year has been set at ₹75 per person. Speaking to the media, Mufti Nasir underscored the obligation upon every Muslim—men, women, and even infants—to pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr before Eid-ul-Fitr prayers. He stressed that this pre-Eid charity ensures that the underprivileged can celebrate the festival with dignity. The prescribed amount, equivalent to 1.75 kg of wheat per person, has been valued at ₹75 following consultations with Islamic scholars. He clarified that parents must contribute on behalf of their minor children, while financially independent adults should pay for themselves. Describing Sadaqat-ul-Fitr as both a means of purifying one’s fast and a support for those in need, the Grand Mufti emphasized that the contribution should strictly reach deserving recipients—such as orphans, the poor, and stranded travelers. He explicitly stated that it should not be diverted for mosque expenses, religious institutions, or political purposes. Mufti Nasir urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to fulfill this religious duty promptly and ensure their donations benefit those who truly need them.

J&K Budget a ‘Love Letter to BJP’, nothing for common people, Lone

Srinagar, Mar 7 (NewsEye): People’s Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone has criticized the Jammu and Kashmir budget, calling it a disappointment that lacks vision for economic growth and relief for common people. In a post on X, Lone said the budget is a mere repetition of Centrally Sponsored Schemes wrapped in Hindi nomenclature, with no concrete measures to tackle unemployment or address the issues of daily wagers and contractual employees. “I was expecting a politically viable & economically vibrant budget rather than an annual statement of outlay & expenditure,” Lone wrote. He pointed out that the promise of 200 units of free electricity is limited to the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) category and is tied to the Centrally Sponsored Roof Top Solar scheme, making it difficult for many to benefit from the announcement. Lone also criticized the government for linking social welfare payments to Dearness Allowance (DA), arguing that any real increase would depend on zero inflation — an unlikely scenario. Petrol and diesel prices are set to increase by ₹1 and ₹2 per litre respectively due to a reduction in rebates, further burdening the common people, he added. The People’s Conference leader also accused the National Conference (NC) of endorsing the same economic statistics it had previously dismissed under BJP rule. “The PM, The HM and the Union Finance Minister were praised more than once… the saga of love letters continues. This love letter to BJP part II,” Lone wrote. The budget, he said, offered “nothing for employment, daily wagers, contractual employees, or minimum wages.”

PDP Slams NC for Betraying Public Trust in Budget 2025-26

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the recently announced Jammu and Kashmir Budget 2025-26, accusing the National Conference-led government of deceiving the public by not fulfilling its election promises. In a statement, a copy of which lies with news agency NewsEye, the PDP said the budget exposes the “massive gap between promises and reality”, particularly regarding the commitment of 200 units of free electricity to every household, a key promise made by the National Conference during its election campaign. “The government had created high hopes among the people by promising free electricity to all households. However, the budget announcement has reduced this benefit to only AAY ration card holders, leaving out the majority of the population,” the statement read. According to the PDP, out of 16 lakh ration card holders in J&K, only 95,000 AAY card holders will receive the benefit — approximately 5-7% of the total population. The party further alleged that 1.27 lakh AAY card holders were removed from the list just before the announcement, raising questions about the government’s intentions. “This selective approach exposes their anti-people policies. If they truly wanted to help the people, they should have implemented the scheme as promised — for all households, not just a small fraction,” the PDP added. The party accused the government of using the promise as an “election gimmick” to secure votes and demanded that the administration expand the scheme to cover all households in line with their election manifesto. The budget was announced by Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, who is also the Finance Minister.
