Deals or Deception: The Facebook Sale Wave Shaking Kashmir’s Markets

Amaan Bhat Ramadan, a month when markets in Kashmir used to be packed with shoppers, things are looking different this year. Sales are low, customer footfall has dropped, and many shopkeepers say Facebook sales are making things worse. For years, e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart have dominated the market, dealing a major blow to local businesses. Now, social media driven sales are adding to the struggle. Businesses have been suffering since 2019, when Jammu and Kashmir lost its special status and was downgraded into a union territory. Just as things started to settle, the COVID lockdown hit, making it even harder for shopkeepers to survive. To attract customers, some started offering big discounts—selling products worth ₹1,500 for as little as ₹500. While this helped some regain sales, others say it has only deepened their troubles. Many shopkeepers allege that these Facebook sales have hurt them even more. They claim sellers on social media offer low-quality products while calling them “branded” just to sell at much cheaper rates. “No brand has such huge profit margins. We can offer a 10–30% discount, but 50–60%? That’s impossible,” said a shopkeeper, who did not wish to be named. Frustrated with the situation, Wahid Punjabi, a Kashmiri businessman even wrote a letter to J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, urging him to regulate unchecked social media sales. “The unregulated sales culture on social media is creating unfair competition, financial distress, and unethical practices that must be stopped immediately,” he wrote in the letter. A video making rounds on social media shows a shopkeeper venting his frustration. “We’ve never seen business this bad. During Ramadan, we wouldn’t get a moment’s rest. Now, we wait for days just to see a single customer,” he said. He also blames Facebook sales for ruining businesses. But not everyone agrees. Some customers say these sales have exposed unfair pricing in the market. “Shopkeepers used to overcharge us. They’d sell pants for ₹1,800–2,000, but now those same pants are being sold for ₹700–800. This proves they were looting us,” said Amir, a 30-year-old resident. These sales are mostly run by influencers and Facebook-based journalists. Some customers even accuse them of misleading buyers. “I saw a video about a sale on Facebook. Next day, when I visited the shop, they told me the product was out of stock and I was late,” said Nasir, who travelled 25 kms to purchase the item. Another buyer shared her experience. “I bought three dresses. They looked great at first, but after one wash, they lost their shine and quality,” said Aaliya. With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching and more sales happening on Facebook, traditional shopkeepers worry they won’t survive if this trend continues. “Customers just aren’t coming like before. If this goes on, we’ll be forced to shut down,” said Mehraj, who owns a clothing shop.

Kashmir Bulletin Denies Defamation Charges, Court Sets May 14 Hearing

Srinagar, Mar 26: Honouring a summon received earlier this month, Kashmir Bulletin on Wednesday presented itself before Court of Additional District Judge in Sopore, in connection with a defamation suit. Editor Kashmir Bulletin Zahoor Malik through his counsel denied any involvement whatsoever in the purported video, gone viral on social media showing a woman heckling an individual. Zahoor contended that the video has been shared by some Facebook page – fairly namesake of the news agency he owns. “We have no connection whatsoever with the page, and the Complainant, has acted in haste and without any proper verification indicted our (agency) name in matter,” he said. Reiterating his stance, Zahoor said that he is a responsible mediaperson and heads a responsible news organisation and prayed the complaint filed against the news page be trashed for it brings disrepute not only to him in person, but to the organisation alike. “The complainant should have acted with proper sense, before resorting to any such malicious act,” Zahoor said. Kashmir Bulletin in an X post following the presence at the Court said, “We strongly deny any involvement in the defamation case filed by Zahid Gani Mirchall. The content in question was posted on a fake page, not our official platform. Our editor attended court today, and the next hearing is set for May 14, 2025. We urge proper verification to avoid such errors.” “We have been asked to attend the court and present our version of things on May 14,” Zahoor said, adding, “This is a completely false case and we are hopeful, the Court will in the very next hearing absolve them of the allegations.”

Srinagar Tulip Garden Opening Marred by Journalist Assault

Srinagar, 26 MAR: The grand inauguration of Asia’s largest tulip garden in Srinagar was overshadowed by an alleged assault on journalists at the entrance, sparking outrage in media circles. Reportedly, a ticket checker physically assaulted and hurled abuses at two journalists—Malik Faizan from Rising Kashmir and Mudasir from Jammu Samwad—as they attempted to cover the event. “We were there to cover the event. The collector asked us to show our ID cards, and as we were about to do so, he used abusive language and called us robbers,” said Malik Faizan. “When we objected and asked how he could say such things, he lashed out in frustration and started beating us for no reason. We just want to know—was it our mistake to cover the event, or was he given the authority to decide who can enter and who cannot, and to thrash journalists?” Eyewitnesses confirmed that the altercation escalated quickly, leaving the journalists shaken. The incident has drawn condemnation from the press community, with demands for strict action against the ticket checker. The tulip garden, a major tourist attraction, was inaugurated amid a colorful display of millions of tulips, attracting visitors from across the country. However, the reported assault on journalists has overshadowed the celebratory atmosphere, raising questions about press freedom and the treatment of media professionals in public spaces.

“SMC Turns Marriage Halls Into Money-Making Machines” Fees Up

Srinagar, Mar 23, KNT: Marriage halls managed by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), originally intended to provide relief to underprivileged families lacking adequate space for wedding ceremonies, have turned into profit-maximizing ventures, leaving many unable to afford them. Despite their intended purpose of facilitating social functions for all, particularly the economically weaker sections, the SMC has imposed hefty charges on these halls without categorizing them based on locality or economic considerations. Under the current pricing model, marriage halls are classified into three arbitrary categories—A, B, and C—without any clear basis. Category A halls are rented out at Rs 25,000, Category B at Rs 20,000, and Category C at Rs 15,000. These exorbitant rates make it nearly impossible for lower-income families to utilize these facilities, forcing them to either incur heavy financial burdens or abandon the idea of hosting ceremonies in these halls altogether. Local residents have expressed their frustration, stating that the marriage halls were built to provide convenience to people, not to serve as revenue-generating enterprises. They have urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and ensure that the authorities do not overburden poor families. “A person who struggles to arrange even the basic items for a wedding ceremony cannot afford such a huge sum just to rent a hall,”a local resident told the news gathering agency Kashmir News Trust. Locals said that instead of acting as community support structures, these halls have been turned into commercial entities, prioritizing financial gains over public welfare. They added that a fair pricing policy should be introduced, with significant subsidies or exemptions for economically weaker sections, ensuring that marriage halls fulfill their original purpose. Appealing to the government, locals have called for an immediate revision of the rental charges and a clear policy that distinguishes between the financial capacity of different users. “The authorities must understand that these halls were meant for the people, not for profit. The administration should take immediate corrective measures before public resentment grows further,” they added. Seven Employees Attached Over Dog Incident at SDH Chadoora

Budgam, Mar 21, KNT: Authorities have taken strict action against seven healthcare employees, including two doctors, after a viral video surfaced showing a dog inside the Emergency Trauma Room of Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Chadoora in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. A disciplinary committee found gross negligence and recommended stringent measures against those responsible. Following the circulation of the video on social media on March 14, 2025, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) constituted an inquiry committee to ascertain the facts. The investigation revealed serious lapses on the part of several employees, leading to immediate action. Three Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) employees, identified as Ansar Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmad Rather of PHC Panzan (Block Chadoora) and Abdul Gani Waza of SDH Chadoora, were found guilty of negligence. As a result, they have been placed under suspension and attached to the DHSK pending further orders. The inquiry also held two doctors accountable for dereliction of duty. Dr. Mubashir Amin, Medical Officer (RMO) SDH Chadoora, and Dr. Aqeel Afzal, Medical Officer Block Chadoora, have been attached to the DHSK as a disciplinary measure. Additionally, Zahoor Ahmad, a pharmacist at SDH Chadoora, and Mushtaq Ahmad, a sanitary inspector at the same facility, were also found negligent and subjected to disciplinary action. The committee’s report also highlighted serious concerns regarding the overall supervision and administration of the hospital. It found that the Block Medical Officer (BMO) failed to maintain an attendance register for night-duty staff, did not ensure the proper functioning of CCTV cameras and footage maintenance, and was unaware of unauthorized persons attending night duties at SDH Chadoora. Furthermore, the inquiry noted the poor hygiene and sanitation conditions of the Emergency Trauma Room, as well as a general lack of oversight and monitoring. The BMO has been formally directed to submit an explanation for lapses and provide a detailed response to the DHSK. The officer has also been instructed to take immediate corrective measures and report back on the steps taken to improve hospital management and ensure strict adherence to professional responsibilities.
