Renowned Shia Muslim scholar and religious leader Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi of Budgam passed away early Friday at SMHS Hospital after a brief illness. He was 85.
A respected theologian, author, and elder statesman of the influential Aga family, Aga Baqir was widely revered for his scholarly contributions and religious leadership within Jammu and Kashmir’s Shia community. He was also the grand uncle of sitting MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.
The funeral prayers of Aga Baqir will be held at the family’s ancestral graveyard, Astan Aaliya, Budgam, following the Friday (Zuhar) congregational prayers. A large turnout of mourners, scholars, leaders, and community members is expected to attend.
Deeply rooted in the spiritual and intellectual tradition of the valley, Aga Baqir authored several books on Islamic theology and jurisprudence and remained a guiding figure for many in the Budgam region and beyond.
The news of his demise has triggered an outpouring of grief across religious and political lines. Condolences have poured in from clerics, community leaders, and public representatives who hailed Aga Baqir’s lifelong service to faith, knowledge, and community unity.
