CM Omar Announces Free Public Transport for Women in J&K

Srinagar, Mar 07 (NewsEye): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced free ridership for all women on government-owned public transport, including e-buses. The announcement was made as part of the J&K Budget.

“This initiative is aimed at easing financial burdens on women and encouraging their mobility across the region,” said Omar Abdullah while presenting the budget. The move is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, especially students, working professionals, and homemakers who rely on public transport for their daily travel.

With public transport fares rising over time, the decision has been widely welcomed, though critics question the financial viability of sustaining such a scheme. Opposition voices argue that while the move is populist, the government must ensure the transport sector remains well-funded to prevent service disruptions.

The scheme is expected to roll out soon, with further details on implementation awaited.
