Srinagar, Jan 19 (KNC): Bringing an end to a prolonged and painful wait of over two years, the body of Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, one of the victims of the Gandbal boat tragedy, was recovered from the Jhelum river on Monday.
Local residents told news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC that the body of the missing victim, which had remained untraced since the tragic incident, was spotted and retrieved from the river stretch near the accident site earlier today.

Soon after the tragedy, elite divers from the MARCOS, along with the SDRF’s Quick Response Team (QRT), had carried out extensive underwater search operations at multiple locations in the Jhelum. However, despite sustained efforts, the body could not be located at that time.
On Monday, locals noticed the body in the river and informed authorities, following which it was retrieved.
The Gandbal boat tragedy had claimed eight lives, including children, and continues to remain one of the most heartbreaking and deadliest incidents in Srinagar’s recent history. With the recovery of the body, the long search operation has finally come to an end. (KNC)
