Derecognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College has triggered strong political and public reaction, with National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah terming the move a grave injustice to students and a worrying sign for the nation’s education and healthcare sector.
Expressing deep concern, JKNC Precident and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said the development reflects a disturbing trend in the country’s attitude towards academic institutions. He termed the derecognition “an injustice” and said the closure of a functioning medical college is a “sad turn for the nation.”
Calling the decision unfair to meritorious students, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that those who secured admission through NEET should not be made to suffer for reasons beyond their control. He asserted that the government bears the responsibility to protect their academic future and ensure they are accommodated in medical colleges near their homes.
Omar Abdullah added that the larger concern lies in shutting down an operational medical college at a time when the country faces a shortage of doctors and requires stronger health infrastructure.
“Ours is perhaps the only place where a fully functional medical college has been closed,” he said,
terming the move troubling and discouraging for aspiring medical students across the country.
Both leaders stressed immediate steps to safeguard the future of affected students and sought accountability over the decision that has led to widespread anxiety among parents and aspirants.
