In the celebration of academic excellence and cultural legacy, Government College for Women, M.A. Road Srinagar, hosted a day-long Student Conference themed “Here and Beyond” on Wednesday, drawing students from across Kashmir to engage in spirited debate and cultural expression.

Marking its 75th anniversary, the college stood tall as an hope of women’s education and empowerment in the Valley. The event, organized by the Debating and Seminar Committee, featured debates on critical contemporary issues such as drug abuse, climate change, and the influence of social media, reflecting the growing voice and vision of Kashmir’s youth.

The highlight of the event came from renowned educationist Prof. Neerja Matoo, who recalled the institution’s powerful legacy:

In 1950, this college opened its doors and liberated Kashmiri women from despondency, illiteracy, and darkness. This was real "azadi" freedom of the mind and soul. I’m proud to have played a small role in that journey,”

she said, drawing heartfelt applause.

Joining her on the jury was Sahitya Akademi Award-winning poet Prof. Naseem Shafaie, who moved the audience with her verses and praised the students’ vibrant cultural displays.

“There’s something deeply rooted yet fresh about the spirit of this institution,”

she noted.

The event opened with a traditional ‘izband’ ceremony, followed by the college tarana and a promotional video crafted by the journalism department. From Rouf dance performances to a skit by the college’s drama club, the cultural richness of Kashmir took center stage, earning cheers from the packed auditorium.

Principal Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq, in her welcome address, reflected on the college’s transformative journey:

We are proud to celebrate 75 years of educating and empowering generations. Our campus today is a hub of ideas, dialogue, and creativity.”

Certificates and awards were presented to winners and participants, with organizing students also receiving felicitations. Other jury members included Prof. Rubeena Khateeb, Dr. Tanveer Habib, and Dr. Suhail Ahmad, who commended the quality of debate and creativity on display.
