“Truth-telling in Kashmir is punishable”: Ruhullah slams X ban on independent media outlets

Srinagar, May 12: Member of Parliament Srinagar and JKNC leader Syed Aga Ruhullah has condemned the suspension of multiple X (formerly Twitter) accounts belonging to independent news outlets and journalists from Kashmir, calling the move “deeply troubling.”

In a post on X, Ruhullah stated, “The sudden and arbitrary suspension of X (Twitter) accounts belonging to independent news organisations like Kashmir Life, The Kashmiriyat, Free Press Kashmir, and several Kashmiri journalists is deeply troubling.”

He added that these platforms are among the few committed to “reporting ground realities,” and their suspension “sends a chilling message that truth-telling in Kashmir is punishable.”

Ruhullah also mentioned Maktoob Media, describing it as a publication that amplifies voices of the marginalized across India, and said it “has also been swept up in this crackdown.”

“These accounts must be reinstated immediately,” he urged. “Invoking national interest to silence journalism is not strength. A state that gags its press isn’t protecting its people, it’s protecting itself from the truth. And that is a dangerous descent no democracy can afford.”
