The body of Taufeeq Ahmad Chopan, 24, who went missing after a boat capsized in Dal Lake near Duck Park on Friday afternoon, was recovered this morning following an extensive search operation led by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Taufeeq, a resident of Chopan Mohalla, Rainawari, had gone fishing with a companion when their boat overturned due to sudden gusty winds. While Abdul Majeed Khosa, the second fisherman, was rescued soon after, Taufeeq remained untraceable despite multiple dive attempts and the use of rescue boats and underwater equipment.
The search was called off late Friday due to poor visibility and resumed early Saturday morning, culminating in the recovery of the body.
Local residents and family members had gathered near the lake since last evening, praying for a miracle. “He was the only son in the family. We hoped he would come back,” a grieving relative told NewsEye.
This incident has once again raised questions about weather preparedness and safety protocols for fishermen and small boat operators on Srinagar’s iconic water bodies.
