Authorities Disallow MMU Meet on Waqf Bill

The meeting of the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) convened by Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Umar Farooq to discuss the controversial Waqf Bill was disallowed by authorities on Tuesday, sparking disapproval from religious quarters.

According to a statement issued by the Office of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir,

authorities informed us late last night that the meeting scheduled to be held at his Nigeen residence would not be permitted. Subsequently, all lanes and bylanes leading to the residence were sealed early this morning, effectively preventing participants from accessing the venue.”

The meeting was expected to bring together key Islamic scholars and religious leaders from across Jammu and Kashmir, including representatives from Ladakh, Kargil, and the Jammu belt.

The agenda focused on growing concerns within the Muslim community regarding the recently passed Waqf Bill, which MMU leaders argue undermines the autonomy of religious institutions.

The MMU had earlier expressed strong condemnation about the provisions of the Waqf Bill, stating that it centralizes control and sidelines traditional Islamic scholars and caretakers of religious properties.
