Srinagar, Feb 21 (PP): As calls for an alcohol ban intensify in Jammu and Kashmir, traders in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar, have taken a stand by urging tourists to respect local culture. The Traders Association of Central Lal Chowk has issued a public appeal to visitors, urging them to avoid liquor, drugs, smoking, and spitting on the streets.
The message, displayed across prominent areas in Lal Chowk, as per the news agency Prism Post (PP), reads:
“Welcome, Dear Tourists!
We kindly request: Love and cherish your family. Avoid liquor, drugs, spitting on roads, and smoking. Respect our culture and traditions. Stay blessed, and enjoy your time in our enchanting city!”
This initiative reflects growing concerns over substance abuse and aims to promote a family-friendly, respectful atmosphere in the city. With tourism rising in the region, traders hope the message will help maintain the integrity of the area’s rich cultural values.
It’s worth mentioning that three Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs)—Ahsan Pardesi from National Conference (NC), Mir Muhammad Fayaz from PDP, and Sheikh Khursheed from Awami Ittehad Party (AIP)—have, in recent weeks, submitted private bills seeking a ban on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir. These bills aim to address concerns over the harmful impact of alcohol and drugs on families and communities in the region. (PP)
