Mirwaiz Kashmir, Molvi Umar Farooq has been placed under house arrest for the sixth consecutive year ahead of Shab-e-Baraat, a night of atonement where Muslims seek forgiveness and blessings from Allah.
Mirwaiz, who is widely regarded as one of the region’s most prominent religious figures, confirmed his detention via a post on X (formerly Twitter), that reads,
“In the meanwhile for the 6th consecutive year I have again been placed under house arrest ahead of Shab-e-Baraat today!”
While his followers prepare to observe Shab-e-Baraat in the usual manner, the absence of their spiritual leader has left many disheartened. Critics argue that the house arrest of religious leaders like the Mirwaiz infringes on religious freedoms and the right to peaceful assembly, while authorities maintain that the measures are necessary for maintaining law and order in the region.
As Shab-e-Baraat unfolds, the continued house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has once again sparked discussions about the political situation in Kashmir and the future of its religious leadership. For now, the Mirwaiz remains confined to his residence, with the community left to observe the sacred night without his direct guidance.
Mirwaiz also welcomed the J&K high court’s decision that individuals cannot be denied passports due to the involvement of their family members in militancy-related activities.
“The High Court’s judgment regarding issuance of travel documents raises hope among those denied passport for years on the basis of their relationship, is welcome,” he wrote on X.
